Tyler Dettloff Selected as Poet Laureate for Chippewa County of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

“For the first time, Upper Peninsula County Poet Laureate and Upper Peninsula County Youth Poet Laureate positions have been established in the majority of the counties in the Upper Peninsula. Recipients were selected based off of input from Escanaba Area Public Schools, Forsyth Township Public Library, Forest Park Schools, Grandpa’s Barn, Island Bookstore, Kenneth J. Shouldice Library, Ontonagon Township Library, Superior Central School District, Tahquamenon Area School-Public Library, and Amanda Wais.
They will hold the status of County Poet Laureate or County Youth Poet Laureate from January 2024 to December 2026, for three-year terms. In 2026, the chosen Poet Laureate recipients will play critical roles in the establishment of continued three-year terms for their counties. As with the United States Poet Laureate positions, the hope is that U.P. County Poet Laureate recipients will head community-focused events that will help to encourage poetry in their region, as well as allow this opportunity for the county to pay homage to the poets’ voices and talents.” Full Article

“What a wonder it is to be nominated alongside such powerful Upper Peninsula writers. I really would be honored to represent poetry of our Upper Peninsula. But really, the opportunity to bring the magic of poetry to youth and communities that would thrive from some rhythm and rhyme, that is what I am most excited for.”

These thirteen songs aim to confirm the folk traditions as true north as I can honestly represent. Anishinaabe handdrums accompany some blues riffs. The Ojibwe Flag Song makes its way into TAR SNAKE to help dismantle Enbridge’s Line 5 under the Mackinac Straights. My daughter’s Anishinaabemowin middle name Minokami is the genesis of the song GOOD EARTH–a song I sing to her everyday since she was an infant. And it’s true–debwe–thunder is in the good earth. Traditional teachings can confirm and so can science. Where else does thunder occur in the great expanse space? We really have something unique here on this good earth. Let’s try not to let it spoil.
